Sixty-Year-Old Man Severely Injured in Traffic Accident: Questions Raised Over Handling of Case

On April 17th, Ms. Wang from Liuzhou, Guangxi, reported to the media that her 60-year-old father, who had just retired, was severely injured in a traffic accident involving a black Renault SUV, resulting in multiple fractures and disabilities. The accident occurred on the evening of April 13, 2024, on Binjiang East Road in Liubei District, Liuzhou. According to Ms. Wang, her father was riding a bicycle across the road when he was struck by the SUV, flown several meters away, and suffered injuries including six broken ribs and a compressed fracture of the spine

Questions Over Alcohol Testing

Ms. Wang raised doubts about the handling of the case, particularly regarding the alcohol testing of the driver, who is a retired judge. She said that although the police collected the driver’s blood sample on the night of the accident, it was not sent to the disease control center for testing until three days later. The test result indicated that the driver did not meet the legal standard for drunk driving. Ms. Wang questioned the delay in sending the sample and the accuracy of the test results.

Disputes Over Compensation and Responsibility

Ms. Wang also expressed dissatisfaction with the police’s use of a simplified procedure to handle the accident. She argued that the simplified procedure is usually applied to cases without major casualties or significant property damage, but her father suffered severe injuries. Additionally, she claimed that the driver initially promised to cover all medical expenses but later refused to sign a written agreement and did not fulfill his promise. The driver’s insurance company only covered part of the medical costs, and Ms. Wang’s family had to bear the rest

Uncertainty Surrounding the Driver’s Status

The driver, identified as a retired judge named Meng, was reportedly on internal retirement at the time of the accident. Ms. Wang questioned whether his status as a retired judge had any impact on the handling of the case. The local court confirmed that Meng had retired but did not provide further information on whether he faced any consequences related to the accident.

Ms. Wang’s case highlights the complexities and potential loopholes in the handling of traffic accidents, especially when involving individuals with special status. It also underscores the importance of transparency and thoroughness in the investigation and resolution process.
