Why Does It Face So Many Obstacles for Chinese High School Students to Restore Weekend Two – day Off?

In recent years, there has been a growing call for Chinese high school students to restore the weekend two – day off. However, this seemingly reasonable demand has encountered significant resistance.

One of the main reasons lies in the intense academic competition. In China, the college entrance examination, known as the “Gaokao,” is a crucial turning point in students’ lives. High school is the most critical stage for students to prepare for this exam. Schools and parents worry that if students have more free time on weekends, they may not use it effectively for study, which could lead to a decline in academic performance. For example, in some key high schools, students are required to attend extra classes on weekends to cover more knowledge points and do more practice questions.

Another factor is the educational environment. Many schools believe that a continuous and intensive study schedule can help students better master knowledge. Teachers can arrange more teaching content and review plans during the extended school days. Moreover, some schools lack the confidence in students’ self – learning ability. They think that without the supervision of teachers on weekends, students may waste time on entertainment rather than studying.

However, it should be noted that long – term over – study without proper rest is not beneficial to students’ physical and mental health. Studies have shown that students who are under excessive academic pressure are more likely to suffer from stress – related diseases such as depression and anxiety. Therefore, finding a balance between study and rest is of great significance.

In conclusion, although there are many obstacles to restoring the weekend two – day off for Chinese high school students, it is necessary to take measures to address these issues and ensure that students can have a more reasonable study and rest schedule.
